The Benefits of Journaling in Your Daily Life

Throughout life, I faced many challenges and big life decisions. And naturally, many of you have gone through the same. On top of that, let’s not forget that there is the bonus of everyday stress – so adulting can seem a little overwhelming, right? In this case, I like to turn to a particular tool that helps me journal!
It is no secret that many of us have kept a journal, especially when we were young. What I like about it is that it is a form of expressive and spontaneous writing – it is a safe space for my thoughts and dreams! For you, it might be a way to remember what happened to you during the day. And for others, it may even become a meditation practice! Yes, journaling holds such potential, you just have to unlock it.
And I hear you – you may think that the only people who keep journals are children, and as you get older, you step out of the habit. However, here I am, doing this as an adult because it is one of the most powerful tools for managing stress and mental health, among other things – which are explained below!

How can journaling help you?

Let’s start with the basics – if you are dealing with anxiety and looking for ways to make yourself feel better and relieved, journaling is the right tool for you. We all deal with intrusive thoughts and dwell on negative feelings from time to time, so writing your thoughts down will be like talking to a friend. The journal will be your friend; the best part is that it won’t unveil your secrets! And like with every friend you choose to include in your life, the same applies to this. I would recommend buying a journal that resonates with your personality and style. You want to look at your diary and feel excited to be writing in such a beautiful piece!
Through journaling, you will be able to externalize the anxious thoughts you keep within and put them into words. It is an excellent way to blow off some steam. By keeping a journal, you can think about some alternatives to your intrusive thoughts, and make you worry less overall. The benefits of journaling are endless!
Did you know that keeping an online journal has been under the radar for many researchers? I found that some studies have even shown that adults who have been recording their thoughts for a longer period (more than 12 weeks) have shown improved signs of their mental state and experience less anxiety. I like to focus on writing down all the emotions I have throughout the day, so my diary becomes a place where I record all of them. Then, I experienced a feeling of catharsis while doing it because it is my safe space!
Also, here’s another idea that I love incorporating – you can try keeping a gratitude journal. It is an interesting approach if you are coping with depression. Regarding this, I discovered that research has shown that if you consciously practice gratitude, you can positively impact your mental health. Trust me; this can transform all those negative feelings and patterns into something positive.
I found that expressing your thanks for everything that has happened to you during the day will do wonders for your well-being! All you need to do is keep a list of all the good things you have experienced and be grateful for it. As for the negative ones, be thankful that they happened and learn and let go of them. That’s one of the many benefits of journaling, it allows you to be grateful for all the emotions you experience: good or bad.

How to journal

While on the subject of journaling for your mental health and mindfulness, I noticed that becoming aware of all the emotions will break a certain negative pattern. Here’s my tip: once you start keeping a diary, you should write in it at least three times a week for 20 minutes or so. You need to make sure to include all the deep feelings you have and try to make sense of everything that is happening around you.
But, in case you are wondering, there is a way to do that too. If you want to focus on a more healthy lifestyle and being mindful, you should center around your feelings and thoughts. This is how you will come to the other end feeling better and experiencing growth. You should start implementing a new attitude, a more positive attitude toward life, and be open to new possibilities. After some time, you will start looking forward to the future more optimistically than ever!
